The wheels on the bus go round and round
Heute sind wir, der Englisch LK von Herrn Deck und der Erdkunde LK von Frau Hülkenberg in Begleitung von Herrn Lenz und Frau Borgmann-Leschke nach London aufgebrochen. Nach dem geschmeidigen Start sind wir gut durchgekommen, bis wir im Hafen von Calais angekommen sind. Nach zwei Stunden Warten und einer verpassten Fähre haben wir es endlich auf See geschafft und sind bis zum Hotel nach 13 Stunden gut durchgekommen.
Von Zufriedenheit über das Hostel ist nur bedingt zu sprechen, aber man nimmt, was man kriegen kann, ist hier wohl das Motto.
Today, we – the Advanced English Course of Mr. Deck and the Advanced Geography Course of Ms. Hülkenberg started our trip to London accompanied by Ms. Borgmann-Leschke and Mr. Lenz. After a smooth start we travelled quickly and safely, until we arrived at the Port of Calais. After waiting for 2 hours and missing our ferry because of three extensive Passport Checks, we finally drove over the channel and finished our trip after 13 exhausting hours.
The hostel is certainly no 5-star accomodation, but our motto is „you take what you get“.

Sightseeing vom Feinsten
Zu früh startete der Tag – mit Frühstück um 7:30 Uhr, doch wer hätte ein „typical English breakfast“ erwartet?
Nach der Verdauungspause ging es los: ein Spaziergang, der nicht zu enden schien. Doch endlich kamen wir an der Tower Bridge an. Nach einer kleinen Fotopause ging es weiter in unseren Bus, mit dem uns eine zweieinhalbstündige Tour durch London erwartete. Abgesehen von den typischen und wichtigsten Orten sowie historischen Fakten hatte unser Guide auch Party- und Shoppingtipps sowie Insidereinblicke eines einheimischen Londoners parat. Zusätzlich dazu musste unser Busfahrer dem Londoner Verkehrsstress entgegenwirken und machte kurzfristig aus dem rechten Fahrstreifen eine Kaffeeraststätte.
Die Tour endete mit tosendem Applaus.
Die zwei Stunden Freizeit danach nutzte jeder auf seine Weise: ob für Fotos, Fish ’n‘ Chips oder einen gemütlichen Kaffee im Starbucks. Die Lehrer/innen haben sogar beim Supreme Court vorbeigeschaut und mit Vertreter/innen von Remain diskutiert. Das GADSA hat hier als Europaschule klar Stellung bezogen (s. Foto).
So wurde in der Pause Energie für die Buckingham Palace Tour getankt. Der atemberaubende Palast hielt für uns die Geheimnisse der Royal Family bereit, besonders die der Queen Victoria. Bis zum Abendessen war der Rest Freizeit und sie wurde ebenfalls produktiv sowie entspannt genutzt. Nach einem Fish ’n‘ Chips Abendessen mit Salat und Onion Rings im Hostel waren alle bereit für die Champions League oder London bei Nacht.
Nur ein Team, das innerhalb des Tages zweimal nach der Pause verspätet aufgelaufen war, konnte Dortmund nicht anfeuern, sondern musste im Hostel die Bank drücken. Wer zu spät kommt, den bestraft das Leben … äh … Herr Deck.
The day started too early – breakfast at 7:30, but who would have expected a typical Full English breakfast?
Our excursion started after a small break: a nice walk that never seemed to end. Finally, we arrived at Tower Bridge. Astonished by the skyline of London, we made a small picture break and finished our walk to the bus. A London tour was waiting for us. Apart from the typical and most important sights and historical facts, our guide was ready to give us party and shopping tipps, as well as insider information about the life as a Londoner. Additionally to this, our bus driver had to do something against the stress in the traffic, so he kind of switched on auto-pilot and made some coffee for the guide and teachers.
Our tour ended with great applause.
The two hours free time were used individually – for pictures, fish ’n‘ chips or a cozy coffee at Starbucks. Our teachers went to the Supreme Court and encouraged the Remainers to keep on fighting for a united Europe (see picture).
After the break, everyone was ready for the Buckingham Palace Tour. The beautiful, breathtaking palace held the secrets of the royal family ready for us, especially the ones of Queen Victoria and her habits in the palace, mostly before her beloved Albert had died. After that, we used our free time differently until dinner, relaxing or racing through London. After the fish ’n‘ chips dinner with onion rings and salad, everyone was ready for Champions League or London at night.
Only one team that had fouled twice during the day was not allowed to cheer for Dortmund. They had to stay in.

(Canterbury) tales
Wisst ihr, wie es ist, wenn man mental nicht bereit für den Tag ist, ein bisschen Ruhe im Halbschlaf verbringen will, doch eine Fliege sich genau über dem Bett überlegt, ihre Gesangskünste zu testen?
Nun ja, das widerfuhr auch den knapp 57 Schülerinnen und Schülern im Reisebus auf dem Weg nach Canterbury. Und wer war die Fliege? Unser aller Lieblingslehrer des Englisch LKs erzählte uns 90 Minuten lang einen Bruchteil seines Wissens über die Canterbury Tales, den Unterschied zwischen pig und pork oder cow und beef, „The Wife of Bath’s Tale“, Linguistik (besonders die Soziolinguistik ist sehr interessant!!), Religion, the Great Vowel Shift, Franzosen und überhaupt Gott und die Welt. Und das alles auf Englisch. Die Rebellionsversuche mit den Musikboxen wurden auch schnell unterdrückt. Doch jeder ging anders damit um: einige schafften ihren Schlaf, einige benutzten Kopfhörer und die Minderheiten ließen sich mit (fun-)facts berieseln.
Irgendwann erreichten wir auch Canterbury. In zwei Gruppen geteilt genossen wir eine spannende Tour durch die ehemals schönste Stadt Großbritanniens. Und wen die Geschichte nicht packte, der fand sich gut im Harry Potter bzw. Game of Thrones Laden, oder auch dem schlichten McDonalds wieder. Nicht wenige beneideten die Privatschulen mit Uniformen und Leben wie in Hogwarts. Der Besuch der Kathedrale hat sich auch definitiv gelohnt. Nach ein bisschen Freizeit und einer ruhigen Rückfahrt kamen wir in Greenwich an und fuhren mit der Fähre in die Innenstadt, jeder machte sich seinen Abend individuell gemütlich.
Just imagine: completely tired, mentally weak and just not ready for the day you are trying to get some sleep. But a noisy fly is making its morning sports and vocal practice over your bed. Is there a connection? Yes,indeed! Now imagine approximately 55 students sitting in a bus on a trip to Canterbury sharing the same fate. And who is the fly? Our most favourite teacher of the advanced English courses, who shared (for 90 minutes!) a small part of his great knowledge about the Canterbury Tales with us. What is more, the difference between pig and pork or cow and beef, “The Wife of Bath’s Tale”, linguistics (especially sociolinguistics is very interesting!!), religion, the Great Vowel Shift, weird Frenchmen and much much more. Of course everything in English. The few rebellious attempts to stop him were just ignored and all chances of survival were minimized. Some managed to sleep, some used headphones, and some, the minority (like the Pakistani in “multicultural Britain”) listened quietly and took in the (fun-)facts.
After arriving in the city we were divided into the two advanced classes to enjoy an interesting tour through one of the most beautiful cities of Great Britain. Those who were not too fascinated by the information had the opportunity to enjoy one of the Harry Potter or Game of Thrones fan shops afterwards. Some of us wished to get a deeper insight into the daily life of a King’s School student with school uniforms and a bit of Hogwart’ s atmosphere. We were even more impressed by Canterbury Cathedral, the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Communion and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Shakespeare day
Wenn der Tag lang ist, muss der Bericht kurz werden, um keinen zu ermüden. Wer sich einen melodischen und britischen Akzent anhören will, ist auf der Tour durch Shakespeares nachgebautes Globe Theater ganz richtig. Danach stand uns die Wahl offen: Tate Museum of Modern Art, Prime Meridian, Kings Cross, British Library, British Museum und noch weitere Museen. Nach dem vorgezogenen Abendessen fuhren wir mit dem Bus wieder ins Globe, um uns “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” anzugucken. Wir haben so lange gebraucht, um einzusteigen, dass die Busfahrerin den Motor bei den 60 Personen ausgemacht hat. Eine erfrischend moderne Inszenierung der Komödie mit bunten Kostümen und guten Witzen hat die zwei Stunden Stehen ein bisschen leichter gemacht.
After a long day nobody wants a tiring long account of the day. So, to make a long story short: a tour of Shakespeare’s Globe is just perfect for somebody who likes the English language , the history of English literature and one of Britain’s most famous playwrights. After that we had the choice: Tate Modern, Prime Meridian, King’s Cross, the British Library, the British Museum and others. After an early dinner we took the well-known red London double-decker to the Globe to watch a performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” As a big group, it took so long for sixty people to hop on that the bus driver even switched off the engine. The refreshing modern interpretation of the comedy with lots of colourful and shining dresses as well as good jokes made the two hours of standing much easier.

Safe on deck
Wie sagt man so schön? Das Beste kommt zum Schluss. Mal abgesehen vom stressigen Packen am Morgen war der Tag voller Freiheiten. Bis auf einen Programmpunkt: Der Englisch LK ging in den Tower of London und der Erdkunde LK in die Brick Lane. Bis 17:30 Uhr hatten wir frei. Ein paar besuchten weitere Museen, doch der Großteil ging an die Oxford Street shoppen oder setzte sich gemütlich in ein Café. Abends machten wir uns mit unserem Bus auf den Heimweg. Auf der Fähre wurde getanzt, geturnt und Karten gespielt. Im Bus war dann für die meisten Schlaf angesagt.
Trotz der schönen Fahrt waren alle froh, als der Bus um 07:00 Uhr am Samstag im die Schweizer Allee einbog.
In contrast to Macbeth, our story has a happy ending. After breakfast and packing, the advanced English class went to the Tower of London to discover royal treasures and the British history. Later, the advanced Geography class went to Brick Lane to see the structural change of a city on a real life example. The rest of the day was free and everyone their favourite parts of London: a final visit at the Natural History Museum or a final shopping trip to Oxford Street or a fresh cup of tea with cookies at a small cafe. At 5:30 pm we said farewell and left London. We reached the ferry in time and passed the customs without problems. On the ferry, we danced, did gymnastics or played cards. The rest of the time most of us slept on the bus. Finally, we arrived at our school at 7:00 am and even though our trip was nice, we were all happy to be back.
